A Self-Made Visionary The George Morris Centre is guided by the spirit of the late George Fletcher Morris, LLD, an agri-food visionary, leader and life-long beef and cash crop farmer from Merlin, Ontario, Canada. George began transforming the farm landscape in the 1960s with a commitment to precision farming and high technology, way before the early adopters had even started thinking about it. As president of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, he introduced a balanced grading system that is the basis for the industry today. His many accomplishments resulted in his appointment to the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1993, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Guelph that same year. George believed the industry needed an organization dedicated to free thought, free speech, and non-compromised analysis, to help it compete effectively in the global marketplace. In 1988, he put his support behind the University of Guelph to create a think tank focussed on ensuring the sustained ability of Canada's agri-food industries. Two years later, the George Morris Centre was launched. It's now a not-for-profit, Canada-wide organization based in Guelph, Ontario...and with an ever-present spirit of independence and truth, thanks to its namesake George Fletcher Morris.
